ACTEUR
BIOGRAPHIE :
Né
à San Francisco, il fait toutes ses études à l’Académie militaire de Californie
à Oakland. S’il débute pour la première fois au théâtre en 1880 dans le rôle de
Barabbas pour la production Richelieu, il
part en tournée, une fois le contrat terminé, avec William Crane et Stuart Robson.
Après
plusieurs participations à de très nombreuses productions théâtres un peu
partout aux États-Unis, notamment aux côtés de Fanny Davenport dans Gismonda ou alors
Laurette Taylor dans The Bird of Paradise, il tente sa
chance en Angleterre et comme Henry Cany pour la
production Arizona le 3 février 1902
à Londres.
Il
revient aux États-Unis alors que le cinéma fait ses premiers pas: il finit par
se faire remarquer après avoir tourné en 1914 The Calling of the North.
Dès lors, il est pris sous contrat par la Paramount qui le distribua dans
une panoplie incalculable de nombreux rôles « du vieux monsieur ». Il
jouera principalement pour Cecil B. DeMille les patriarches, les rois, les
businessmans, les pères dominateurs avec un sérieux et une aisance qui le
rendent très populaire.
Et
pourtant, le dernier rôle dans lequel on se souvient encore d’avoir vu Theodore
Roberts sera pour le film Les dix
commandements, tourné en 1923 et où il tenait le rôle de Moïse.
